Mrs. Mussarrat Iqbal is married and lives in the area of Bhittai Colony in Karachi. Her family’s living conditions used to be extremely unfortunate as they did not have any definite means of earning. Her husband worked as security guard in their neighbourhood and received a meagre wage in return. He was soon let go due to his illness. She used to live in a rented house; with no source of income left, they were no longer capable of paying the rent. She eventually had to move out and come to live at her daughter and son-in-law’s home. Mussarrat’s daughter has two children of her own and her husband is an electrician by profession. His income, too, was highly unreliable. He got paid when there was a job to do, but could go without any work for weeks on end.
Amidst all their financial troubles, Mussarrat’s relative told her about Akhuwat and their interest free loans. She approached their nearest branch and applied for a loan. Upon her application being approved she received a loan with which she started her own clothing business from home. Her husband also assisted her with the work and they both sold new or used garments to people in their locale. They particularly sell men’s trousers and denim pants. Mussarrat and her family’s financial conditions have improved over time and they now have a steady source of income. She has successfully completed her first loan and now wants to improve her earnings even further. She has requested for a second loan to purchase and sell more quantities of garments.
